Ruin Arm Translation Patch

Posted on by admin

This is an official response from the Otogetranslation team. TL;DR @ bottom of post.We as a group started our projects out of the love and deep respect we have for the otome genre and community behind it. Since our most recent release: the Diabolik Lovers English translation patch, we’ve received many comments regarding the way we released our patch. With so many comments, concerns and support, we felt it right to make this post in order to clarify all that is happening and so nobody can misconstrue our intentions. Our intentions were to never hurt the companies publishing these games, or to in any way shape or form promote/condone piracy and any other illegal methods to obtaining the game. We wanted the patch to be accessible to those who own the game legally. This was our way of making the patch ethical while still supporting the publisher.

We wanted to avoid another “Starry Sky” incident, where the release of the game + translation was accessible and free to all. We believed that true fans of the franchise would support the company by purchasing the game and obtaining it legally.

As such, we did not release the game and patch together, only the patch, and asked for proof of purchase of the game. The patch was distributed only to those with verified purchases.Certainly, there is a pirated version of Diabolik Lovers floating around the internet somewhere, however we have no relation to that release; our English patch was not created to promote this method. Anyone who decides to obtain the game by piracy is solely up to them. We enforced and stood by our decision of keeping the patch only for those who have purchased the game.During the initial release of our patch (and currently), we asked for proof of purchase of the game and verified such proof before releasing the patch to each individual. As a result, we received backlash from the PSVitaHacker community, were insulted as gatekeepers and degraded because we stood by what we believe in. Despite our efforts, an individual trusted with the patch leaked it to the public.

As much as we wanted to prevent this from happening, our patch is out there open to the world. We are heartbroken at the events of this.Besides the PSVitaHacker community, we also faced some backlash from a portion of the otome community questioning our integrity towards the otome genre. Concerns of whether “hacking” into the game was ethical and allowed. We believed that our method of “hacking” the game to produce the translations were ethical because we asked and enforced that individuals own the game legally.

To us, this was not another Starry Sky event. We believed we did things proper and hoped it would stay that way. We still stand by our belief, because in any event people did go out and purchase the game, thus supporting the company, which could only ever benefit the franchise and fandom (thank you to those that did).We also faced some concerns regarding some of the projects we have going on currently, more specifically, Collar x Malice Unlimited.

We started CxM Unlimited before Aksys picked it up, before we had any information about a localization. When Aksys announced picking it up, we were already near completion. As for a release? With the events we faced after the release of Diabolik Lovers, we don’t forsee a release at all.Lastly, there were also false rumors spreading about our group gaining monetary value from releasing the Diabolik Lovers patch. We as a group and all individuals involved did NOT make any money from the release. Any purchases of the game went directly to the sale, we did not ask for any payment for the patch, only proof of purchase of the game to verify proper ownership.Any other future projects by us are put on placed on indefinite hiatus, maybe we’ll translate some stuff in the future after all of this blows away, maybe we’ll translate some stuff and keep it in house only, maybe we’re just done with translations, we’re not sure. But right now, our greatest concern is keeping our staff in a positive and healthy mental condition. These past few days has been difficult to everyone involved, we only ever started our group and projects to provide enjoyment from the otome genre to all, so to face such backlash like this is disheartening to say the least. We’ve always known that there was a bad reputation within the Diabolik Lovers fandom. We still love all the great people in this community and don’t believe adding negativity makes anything better. However we won’t be translating Diabolik Lovers MORE,BLOOD and we hope the community understands our decision. Any and all support we received is the only reason we have our heads up.

You ladies (and gents) are the reason we haven’t just outwardly quit and dropped everything. Providing the otome happiness to everyone has and still is our great joy. We’re just discouraged and sad at what has happened in the last couple of days. Thank you so much for believing in us and supporting us, your words are what gives us hope.- OtogetranslationsTL;DR: A bunch of idiots didn’t read our original posts and started a lot of rumors about it so here we are explaining things. We distributed the patch through the “vita hacking” system, believing that it was ethical for us to do so because we asked for individuals to provide proof of the game. We did NOT openly distribute the game + patch to the public. We only distributed the patch, how people acquired the game was up to them.

That's why we asked for proof. The patch was leaked, to the best of our abilities we tried to prevent it.

Collar x Malice Unlimited was picked up by us way before Aksys picked it up. None of us made money from the patch, we’re all broke af. Didn’t do it for the money. We’re done translating things for now, who knows in the future. It's unlikely any other group would be willing to ever pick up the DL fandisks. To whoever leaked the patch, good job, you ruined it for yourself and everyone else o7.edit: Tumblr announcement.

Also, I'd like to highlight something in the tumblr post so everyone gets how serious this is.' Then he got mad and sent (WARNING: GORE IMAGE) to me.' (The image is bloody, so don't click if that bothers you). I'm so sorry that this happened.

I used to translate DL years ago so I was happy to hear about your project to finally fully translate the entire game. I think it's completely reasonable to want to verify that people own the game prior to distributing it, since Rejet has been getting more serious in cracking down on piracy/gameplay videos/music etc.

It just really sucks that some people will go out of their way to ruin something people put a ton of effort into.Kind of unrelated, but DL translations are honestly kind of cursed. I feel like every attempt to translate the entirety of the game over the last 6 or 7 years has been plagued by people stealing, reposting, or being really malicious to translators. I personally quit because some of my own translations and scans were being stolen and people were threatening me, and I know similar stuff happened to another translator at the time. At a certain point, it became so mentally exhausting I couldn't deal with it anymore and my experience in that fandom kind of ruined translating for me. Haha yeah it seems like trying to translate DL is like opening the arc of the covenantWe actually had a whole thing towards the beginning of the year where we found out one of the people that was letting us use her translations had actually stolen almost all of them! We noticed when one of our translators was looking over the scripts & went '.hey wait a minute. I wrote this!'

But honestly sooo many people who are actually fans have been so supportive & understanding over all of this. Despite some greasy incel ruining it, the actual community has actually been really excellent to us. This is the thing that makes me angry. They can do whatever they want without any consequences because they don't even read otomes, so it doesn't matter to them if the translation group goes under. It just annoys me as to why some people are so petty.

You aren't a DL fan, why do you care so much about the conditions to obtain a patch for a game that you're never even going to play. Why bother go out of your way to ruin it for other fans? There's no reason other than the ego boost. Their terrible actions don't even have any self benefit to it, it's just done to be terrible. The more I think about it, the more absurd it becomes. This is so sad.I can't believe people thought it was illogical to show proof of purchase for a game that would originally need to be bought anyway. That's so messed up. The people who worked the hardest with good intentions ended up being hurt the most. The person who asked for the leak is honestly missing half their brain.

They completely missed the point and invited a psycho.I'm so srry you guys had to go through that. I hope you all rest well and thank you for all the time you spent trying to make other people happy. This also makes me lose faith in humanity. I don't internet otome besides on reddit, so I have no clue whats going on.

I personally have some beliefs about emulation/pirating/hacking of games that are either too old or have no hope of getting official translations that are in 'illegal territory' and thus is against your criteria. However, I fully recognize and understand it is your group's choice and its the most ethical one as that. Funny how you guys are getting hate from both the pirates and the antipirate crowd. This is really silly. You need to hack the game to make a patch, which yea is 'somewhat' illegal but you requiring proof of purchase and you are not selling the patch which makes the somewhat illegal point moot. Smh.people.Edit: I read some of the thead responses over in Vitaprivacy and just wow.

Some were making a case for open download but many, far too many, were so vicious and spiteful. They probably don't even care about DL or the otome genre in general but still are so angry. I can logically understand DL fans' upsets, but random people who don't even play 'girly games' and want a dedicated group to go away? That's a whole nother level of wasted energy. I’m just at a complete loss of words right now, but wow. My words alone aren’t much, but I’m sending so much love to my friends and those who’ve interacted with OtogeTranslations. This is just so upsetting, for everyone involved from translating to proofreading to doing graphics to adding in the translated files, and so much more.

I feel speechless.I’m so sorry that this has happened. As a translator involved with this group, I feel so much that I can not express my feelings completely through words alone.EDIT: At this time, I will also be taking a step back from being the lead translator of Hakuoki SSL.

With the toxicity surrounding the situation, I wish to stand in solidarity with the group, and put the translation on hiatus as well. I’m sorry if I have disappointed any of you who have been looking forward to seeing this game also translated, but I just can’t translate while my heart is broken over this.

I am a hakuoki fan and would love a patch for SSL, that being said I want to be a respectful individual and understand your decision. I understand if you want to put the project/translation on hold for now after this news. It's the first patch released by the group and only after a few days, someone not involved in the otome fandom decided to disrespect the group and release the patch openly. It's discouraging to say the least.I would be lying if I said I wasn't disappointed you'd consider dropping the project due to recent events, but I will respect whatever decision you make.

I'd say, to maybe look for encouragement to look to this thread and its fans. I feel a lot of participants in this thread are supportive of the otome genre.

Many of us are more than willing to financially support the niche genre we love. I completely understand where you’re coming from!

However, at this time, it will be on a temporary hiatus.
