Matthew Dae Smith Lansing State JournalEAST LANSING - Thousands of Spartan loyalists are expected to make the pilgrimage to campus on Saturdays this fall to partake in football-related revelry.Whether it's for the in-person game day experience, tailgating, or sharing memories of campus with friends and family, everyone trekking to campus will face similar perils, parking chief among them.MSU kicks off its season Saturday with the first of four consecutive home games, welcoming fans back to campus after last year's disappointing 3-9 season. Eager Spartans will be out for the best parking and tailgating spots; here's how to get ahead of the crowd. Ditch the car (if you can)Whenever possible, consider finding an alternative to driving to campus. Use your favorite ride-sharing service, carpool, or another mode of transportation that doesn't need a full-fledged parking space.Locals might consider biking along the Lansing River Trail in order to get to campus.If you do decide to drive to campus, you'll be competing with between 5,000 and 10,000 other motorists seeking public parking, according to John Prush, a deputy director with the Michigan State University Police Department. That number fluctuates depending on which team MSU is facing. Where to parkSpartan fans have a host of options if they decide to drive to campus.Free parking is available to those who park at Lot 89 at the corner of Mt. Hope Road and Farm Lane and pay to shuttle to Spartan Stadium.

The cost is $5 per-game or $35 for a season pass. Seven home football games are scheduled this season.Public game day parking is also available at Munn Field for $30, which serves as an alcohol-free tailgating site. 23 against Notre Dame — public parking becomes available at 1 p.m. Fans aren't allowed to line up for parking ahead of time. Reservable spots still availablePasses for parking at Ramp 7 — located on Harrison Road across from the Breslin Student Events Center — are still available, according to Paul Schager, associate athletic director. Season passes cost $210 and are available through the MSU ticket office.
Game-day passes are also available. Locals can call 517-355-1610 while everyone else can call 1-800-GO-STATE. Spartan Stadium renovations completedA south end zone addition to Spartan Stadium was completed last week, bringing with it new bathrooms and concession areas.
